Whimsical Piece: Spring

Spring is right around the corner and I’m so excited.

Spring is by far my favorite season of the year. I live in Michigan and we get to experience all four seasons, but to me, spring means that we have the longest stretch of warm weather ahead of us and I can stop being anxious about winter.

I love the mud, I love the rain, I love that it’s cold in the shadows and warm in the sun, I love all the snow melting, I love the smell of grass and leaves growing.

Spring makes me want to take road trips and go exploring; it makes me feel more energized because I know the days are getting longer instead of shorter; I have allergies but I don’t even care because the sunshine and warm air compensate for my sneezing.

There is truly no better feeling than cleaning out my living space in the spring. My favorite feeling is being able to open all of the windows and get fresh air in my space while I dust and vacuum. I love putting away all of my sweaters and winter gear and bringing out all of my lighter clothes, it makes my closet feel less bulky.

I love being able to take my dogs out in the morning and not hate the fact that I’m out of bed. I’m more motivated to work out, to eat well, to wake up earlier. I love to stretch out all of my winter weariness and feel better after winter is done.

I went to college in St Paul, Minnesota, and the winter is so much worse there than it is in southwest Michigan. Some of my favorite spring memories are in Minnesota: how I’d walk to campus on the first day above 40℉ and pass people in shorts and in sandals and flip flops. I once had a roommate from New Jersey and her first time seeing these excited Spring Students was one that shocked her. I totally understood how they felt though.

My friends and I would take drives around the Twin Cities and look at all of the flowers and trees blooming. We’d play Mumford and Sons and Sufjan Stevens with the car windows down, just breathing in the sunlight and the smells of spring. There was one stretch of road that had lilac bushes in the median, we’d park our car and run through these bushes and soak it all in.

Spring evokes all of these memories for me, as well as the comfort of knowing that summer is coming and it’s not almost over. This warm time of year goes by too quickly, but that makes it more treasured and precious to me.
